The "performance" setting in some of the older shop manuals is 1.00mm
Much past that, you start to get to the hot side of EGT's.
If it still sucks bag at 1.00, then you may have a "yellow dot" pump.

Good Question!
I have no clue how the automatic device works. But the key is to make it
go full advance.
If it's too much hassle, just set your timing to ~1.05mm and be done
with it.
I may be revising my process soon. I may knock back my timing to 1.00mm
because The engine sounds a touch too "marble-ly" at light loads.
