[Vwdiesel] Hillbilly TUNING ?

I've been playing with tuning by hear for about a month, seems to me, its quicker and more reliable to just break out the tools and do the job to spec.
What I would like to find is a trip computer that would display mileage in real time. Then use that data to adjust the pump advance for maxium mileage within the .8 to 1.00mm range.
Anyone know of a trip computer for diesels that's commercially available?
