Today marked our last trip in the Westy this year, so I pulled the injectors as soon as
I got home and did a hot compression test. The numbers were as I expected, quite
low at 390 - 375 - 330 - 330.
It's possible the weak battery resulted in decreasing values as I went along, as the
cranking speed was getting slower. Pulses on the gauge went something like 75-
150-200-250-300, which explains why it takes several seconds to start when the GPs
don't come on - it takes several full revolutions just to get 300psi.
I am now at 3000km since new rings and honing on original pistons. Possibly the
bores were more tapered than I thought - I guess I should have asked the shop to
verify my measurements. It appears either they aren't yet seated, or they won't ever
seat. Since I probably won't drive it again until spring, I guess I'll have to wait to find
out which it is.
On the plus side, we spent an amazing sunny day on Mystic Beach, with the kids
running barefoot in the sand! Not many places you can do that in December in
Canada... :-)
