[Vwdiesel] Cold weather survival, OT

OK, here is a tip that is both very much VW diesel AND survival. In the
1980 and up to '82 for sure (I have both an '80 and '82 Rabbit engine here)
the intake manifold air filter box was cast aluminum including the intake
runners after you remove the plastic cover and filter element. A friend
told me he had on more than one ocassion removed cover and filter and put a
diesel soaked rag in that metal box that he lit on fire. That puts really
hot gasses and air into the cylinders during cranking providing much more
heat once compressed. This can help get the engine to start in low
temperatures if you are really stranded.

I am a lot of "boy scout" by nature in that I believe in fore preparation
for possible emergencies. If I were travelling in the wilderness with a
diesel VW I'm sure i'd have a kit in the trunk that included a second
battery wired with isolation diode to stay fully charged, spare fuel, oil,
kerosene, tow rope, shovel, blanket, candles, food (not the kind
spoecifically formulated for frozen dogs!), potable water, paper towels,
condoms, strike anywhere matches sealed in condoms, a flashlight, a 2-way
radio of some sort, automotive tool kit, propane tank and heater/torch with
hose, big screen TV, computer, wireless DSL connection, hot air popcorn
maker, portable generator, bowling ball, typewriter ribbons (Steve Martin
survival necessities), and a trailer containing 16 dancing girls.

My '91 turbo 1.6 Jetta is now in the shop for the winter to get major work
including wheel bearings, tires with straight rims, rear brakes, clutch,
steering rack, some body work including removing and sealing the windshield,
and also installation of an electric winch and airhorns (now on hand thanx
to sales at Princess). I also plan a second, trunk mounted HD 12 volt
battery and a 1000 watt Xantrex 120 volt power inverter (on hand). I would
like to install a secondary heated WVO fuel system as well, a trailer hitch
and a roof rack.

Rob
