When you get vehicle registration papers in Ontario the government insists
you pay tax based on the value of the written receipt (if the vehicle is
deemed worth less than $1000 wholesale according to their blue book, or on
the bluebook value if over $1000. The so called "blue book" value of my 1991
Jetta 1.6 TD was about $980 CDN wholesale and $1900.00 retail when I
registered it earlier this year, so the tax I had to pay was based on the
factual $250 sales receipt. The car had a recently rebuilt engine and is
virtually rust free but needed and still needs a bunch of mechanical work
which it will get this winter. I had to put in new front disk brakes, and
suspension bushings to get it roadworthy at first. Now that I see that it
has a lot of potential and I like it a lot I am prepared to spend time and
money upgrading it in a large way. My investment in $$$ and especially time
will be way more than book value once I'm done. I already have installed an
all stainless steel custom dual exhaust that is easily worth 1.5 times the
book value of the car.
$5400 sounds like optimizm to the high end to me. The car may give the
purchaser his money back in service and fuel economy at this price but the
problem as I see it is the value that 'society' places on it is so much
lower than his investment. If it gets stolen or broken by someone else's
fault he won't be properly compensated. That makes buying for this big
price quite a financial risk IMO.
