Have you searched online for radiators? I got a couple new ones a few
years ago from a place online (can't remember the name) for a Bronco and
a Trooper. They were cheaper by far, even with the shipping than I
could find anything locally here in S. Idaho. Or, go to the W-yard and
scrounge one. If a car has been sitting in a yard for years without
coolant in it, it should be OK. Better to be dry than still have the
old coolant sitting in it.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Need to find a good radiator for '81 rabbit.
Hi,
While we were having some good weather I had time to 'work' on my
rabbit(s).. Both the "parts" car and the "good" car have bad radiators
that are not able to be fixed. I also found a few other 'items'.....
Is there some place that this knowledgeable group could recommend for
finding a GOOD new or used radiator? Local shop wants about $150 for
a 'new' one.
Also, I found that the passengers side u-joint boot has been bad for a
while
and there is a fair amount of slopp in it.. Any idea what it would cost
to get parts to repair this?
One last thing, the 'good' car has A/C on it, and I would like to remove
it
and the compressor.. This means that I will have to find some other way
to power
the alternator, as it came powered by a secondary belt driven off the
A/C compressor
belt hub. Is there stock parts that could be gotten to mount the
alternator in
the correct alignment to be driven off a longer belt from the crank and
water pump?
I also see that the lower bearing on the steering column has fallen down
and lets
the shaft rattle around.. :( I hope that the parts rabbit will have
enough good parts
to let me fix that..
If these things get to costly, I think I will just part out the cars and
push whats left to the junk yard... so I hope to find some helpful info
before
it gets to that point.
I fear getting in to these cars to deep and finding more and more
wrong..
Both cars engines were in "running" condition, but I have only moved
them under their own
power less than a block before I got started trying to get things fixed.
I hope that I have not bit off more than I can handle...
