To remove a Bunny tank you have to drop the rear cross member and all
associated straps and hoses. It isn't a big deal but much easier on the
Rabbit pickup. I think there are 4 bolts holding the member in place.
When doing this, don't have the car up too high or, block the wheels so
the the unit doesn't fall. You want it down just enough to wiggle the
tank free.

You might want to check the inside of the tank with a flashlight through
the fuel level sending unit opening before going to all this trouble.
Is the tank severely bent in? Have you tried draining it?

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Fuel Tank Sabotage!

Noticed about a-year-and-some-months-ago my Rabbit diesel was only
taking max 9.2 gallons when bone dry. Down from the usual, if I remember
correctly, 10.6 or so. It's appraoching 60k on the rebuild and would
like to have injectors inspected, but I would like to drop the fuel tank
and empty whatever it is that is occupying some of its volume. What's
involved with this? The tank now has a locking fuel cap, which means on
cold days the key won't turn. Need a propane torch to heat it for a
second. Not good. Lock deicer won't do the trick.
