During the early eighties, BMW had serious problems with build up of carbon on intake valves. Performance and throttle response were severly affected. Their solution was to remove the intake manifold, bolt up an adapter and blast the intake valve and port with crushed walnut shells. This worked well & didn't remove any metal. 
Later on it was discovered that some fuel additives 
(BG products - 44K) did the same job & cost no shop time.
