[Vwdiesel] The '81 Rabbit is alive

  Start it, look at the clear line (formerly clear) from the filter to the 
pump.  
You may need to hold a drop light behind it.  Rev the engine up to about 
1200rpm and look for bubbles.  If they keep coming you need to check all 
the hoses and connections between there and the tank.  That's the filter, 
a hose right behind the filter and the hose from the tank to the hard line.
