[Vwdiesel] runs rough when cold

  If you're sucking air then it will take a little time to "catch up" with it 

so you have enough fuel for full operation as it slowly purges it out of 
the system.  Most likely not all of it will go if it's leaking that much 
so IF there's a leak, you'll have even more power if it's fixed.  
  Could be fuel filter, at least drain the bottom of it into something 
and look for water or remove and invert, shake and see what comes 
out (into a container).  Air filter could do or contribute to this as well.  
Bad injectors could also.
