[Vwdiesel] Engine ID

Exactly. Look at the bolt heads.
You don't want to be removing and replacing head bolts- so oil trickles into
the one you just removed... you reinstall it, and "POP!" there goes the
block from a hydraulic lock as the oil bottomed in the bolt hole. No more
daily driver. Take engine serial number to your stealer or aftermarket parts
supplier. They can tell you what you need from that.
It's on the front of the block, just below the headgasket where you were
looking at holes in the gasket.

Take your valve cover off and look at the head bolts. If they have
hexagonal slot wrench holes (big allen wrench), they are 11mm. If they
are multi-pointed star type, they are 12mm stretch bolts.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] Engine ID
Hello all-
I want to order a new headgasket and bolts for my
engine, but am having a hard time knowing what set to
order.
I'm told that the engine originally came out of an '81
or '82 car. (Whether or not the engine was swapped
into that car before this is not known...)
Its got a 2 notch gasket in there now, and starts with
ease even in very cold weather, so I feel comfortable
ordering another 2 notcher for it.
The problem is that I understand that in that time
frame (81-82) some of the engines used 11mm head
bolts, and others used 12mm.
Is there any way to tell for sure which one my engine
has? The engine number is hidden behind hoses, the
injection pump, etc to the point that I'm not sure I
would be able to tell for sure exactly what it is.
Are there any other options for identifying the block
and knowing which kit to order?
Thanks,
David
