[Vwdiesel] EGT gauges?

While perusing EGT gauges on EBay, I noticed many of them, in fact most 
of them, show the needle at some point other than 0 in the pic. This struck 
me as a bit odd, and too much of a coincidence. Is there some way to 
calibrate these, or other explanation for this? (there's at least 4 listed right 
now, of all different types, with needles resting at non-zero...) What gives?

Also, will a 12' cable be long enough for a Vanagon TD? I've heard the 
lead can be lengthened, just not shortened. Is this true? Is drilling & 
tapping the manifold or cast downpipe feasible? Most of the probes look 
like they are designed to just clamp onto a standard pipe...
