I'm at a loss as to why this would 
be.

  It just is.  Even with Total Seal rings I get oil weeping from the turbo 
intake. On the Rabbit it puddles in the intake box.  Fairly new VW 
diesels have it, TDI's have a major problem when it mixes with the 
EGR soot...  You are not alone...
  I'd gues it's more of an issue with these engines from higher oil 
flow to the heads than many other engnies.  Combine that with some 
blowby, valve blowby coming out under puddled oil and an overhead cam 
slinging oil about and droplets go out with the bathwater.  ;-)
