Mike.
My wife can start either one of our two diesels at -35c.
I can get them both to go at -40. I've tried it this winter after all this
talk of cold starting...
I'm not trying to brag or anything, but seriously, properly tuned and
maintained, starts should not be much of an issue. If it does not start,
there is something not right. Fix that and your car will start.
Sorry to be so blunt, but that's really the way it is.
0-40 synth oil
good battery
good starter
good cables and connection
timing correct to a tad advanced.
Valves adjusted properly if solid lifter engine.
injectors good (mine are purposely a tad high on break pressure)
cold start cable connected and functional.
Good battery
good alternator (14.5v at battery with engine running)
good battery

If the motor is tired, save your time on the esoteric devices and install a
second good battery. If you spin it, it will start. Actually a lower
compression engine will spin faster, and heat up the prechambers from
compression heating (like all the old diesels relied on, that's why they had
decompression levers)
If you have to crank and crank, it ain't cranking fast enough. If you crank
for as long as it takes to draw two deep breaths, stop, reglow, retry.

I wish you were nearby, we'd make that puppy start.

-James

Say it was really really cold........would it be better to cycle your GP's
3,4 or 5 times, then crank,
OR:
cycle perhaps twice, then crank & crank.
Assuming you only have so much reserve in your battery and only get one good
chance at it?

I am awaiting to hear back from Hagar or anyone, who can tell me about
preheating your
GP's with only 6v............definately an interesing idea I can tell you.

I thought about putting 12v on my block heater, but the output would be so
small I doubt it would
overcome the cold ! (let alone warm up the engine)

Mike in NB.........where temps are once again beginning to dip down into the
double NEGATIVE digits C
