[Vwdiesel] Starter pinions in extreme cold

1945  to 2005  ------ and hundreds of starters later ? .-----Here is what I am doing --and it works.

I remove ALL lubricants from both end of starter .  Yes strong solvent and  high pressure air
and rags.

Then I relubricate everything with plenty PLENTY  of    Dow Corning    Molykote  G-rapid spray.

Pay special attention to spriral grooves on bendix.   ----over run cluch   will work with grease inside.

Light silicone grease may work ----but I prefer to tell about things that I personally
have tested.

Val Christian    try starting with a seperate battery for solenoid.   if it still growls   --remove
starter  and have it GROWLERED.  ---- your symptom will be found on tons of starters
voltage on holding coil drops due to load .  ---Been there hundreds of times. Lots of
starter solenoids have two stage pull in  coils.
