I went looking for a tranny jack, and happened on an
ATV jack that was on clearance.
They have a very wide "footprint" and have two padded
arms that are meant to cradle a motorcycle or ATV and
usually come with a ratchet strap or two.
Turned out that was very nice for removing the auto
tranny out of my Passat, tranny was very stable on
there with a board placed across the pads.
As a bonus (and why I had been thinking about getting
an ATV Jack in the first place) the padded arms are
the perfect distance apart for placing the block of an
air-cooled VW engine on when pulling it out.
Only possible drawback is that it may not go quite as
high as some jacks, but that really wasn't an issue
with me and the Passat so I wouldn't worry about it.
