I did some searching a while back on this issue.  I found several research 
articles from other countries that weren't anti-diesel.  The gist is that 
diesels for a given year are better at most harmful emissions, worse on particulates 
(raw carbon).  The next generation of diesels that will be released with 
particle filters and NOx catalytic converters will be better in all categories.  
The major issue facing clean diesels in the US is that they cannot be run on 
the currrent high sulfur diesel fuel.  The current US TDI engines are lower 
power, higher emission engines than the European counterparts due to the fuel in 
US.  Kinda sad.
