That pump problem leading to runaway that I mentioned
earlier has come to mind because of a strange symptom that
my father's Citroen AX has. The car is about the same size
as a Rabbit and is normally aspirated (although there was
apparently a rare turboed version). In top gear he can be
cruising at 50mph when the car will suddenly lurch forward
and race towards the car infront. He says this symptom of
runaway lasts for what seems minutes and needs a hard
application of brakes to prevent racing. the car burns no
oil and it does 60mpg imp round town and more than 80mpg on
a run.
He has stopped several (about 6) other owners with the same
car to ask them if they get the same problem. They say no
and infact find the car somewhat sluggish... although this
may be somewhat subjective.
The car is about 15 years old and has displayed this
occasional (frightening) surge for the 10 years of my
fathers ownership which is why he thought it was the turbo
coming online... but upon working on the car exhaust 5 years
ago found no turbo!
I can only think of the pump or he's imagining it ;o)
