Apparently not a converted gas engine, but rather a co-design because
the european market was diesel oriented, based upon the two mechanics
who I talked with. (Car and Driver, Road and Track might disagree.)
Dunno. I thought I'd read something about the converted gas engines
of the 70's/80's and the VW was mentioned. It does seem they'd put
5 more head bolts on it if it was an original diesel design. If they had
we'd see less head gasket problems. Can't back up what I'm saying
though so maybe I'm wrong.
The thing that makes it difficult to argue is that VW tends to overengineer
the engines from the beginning. Most of their gasser internals are about
as heavy duty built as most comperable diesels! After working on Subarus
for a long time, I got into a VW air cooled. Sub is basically a water cooled
copy. BOY was I impressed by the size of those journals!!! The VW rod
journals were bigger than the Subaru mains! That was when I was first
sold on VW.
