I see a LOT of complaints about the VW glow plug system and I JUST DON'T
GET IT! It works nearly flawlessly except for a couple burned out plugs and
maybe a fuse or two and a relay for 10 to 15 years. Then other problems
come up to cause gp problems. The number one being water leaks. So
of course blame the gp relay for not working with a tablespoon of water in
it. Glow plugs burn out so blame the relay or plugs because they're not
10 to 20 years old and failing or the PO has rewired something or the
temp sensor has finally failed.
Yup, there are quite a few parts and connections that can fail but they're
CHEAP to replace. Isn't that why we drive VW's in the first place? Sure
a button and a Ford relay is simple but buttons can burn out, relays do
fail, glow plugs will still fail. If you share the car with anybody, that
system will ultimately lead to a dead starter or many dead glow plugs
due to holding the glow for too long, too little or not at all.
The wiring is simple as "pie." ;-) Heavy wire in, heavy wire out, ground
to the coil, power to the timer circuit and a wire to the indicator light and
the sensor. Most are independant of the solder failure (somewhat) prone
fuse/relay panel.
I LIKE being able to hop in, turn the key, wait several seconds and go.
I don't have to think how warm the car is, I don't have to push another
button, remember to turn them off or anything, just wait and go. It's such
a habbit that I turn on most car ignitions and sit there until it hits me
that
it's not a diesel! :-)
It's usualy simpler to fix it and go for another fairly trouble free 10
years
than to tear it out and start over for a nearly trouble free 15.
