Often associated with Wagnerian opera, specifically

OK, as I said, I was young in the 40's when the 3 stooges used it in one of
their skits.
And yes, it was the Valkieries, not Aida, but she did have cow horns on her
helmet
The expression goes back at least that far, probably to vaudville.
We may be smart and good looking, but a little short on culture.
