Young US Air Force Airman, Wife, Three year old and three month old,
stationed at Chanute AFB, Rantoul, IL. Decides to go home to Tennessee
to do a little dirt bike riding with brother-in-law. Heads home on a
three day weekend. 12 miles into the trip, thumping noises are being
emitted from the trailer. Pull over to find a knot on the trailer tire
from the bead to the tread. No problem, wife get out and holds trailer
up while I change it...no not really. I throw the spare on and hit the
road. 30 miles later it starts to snow and spit freezing rain. We head
south. Three mile from Ina, Illinois the spare wraps itself around the
axle. Throw the knotted spare on and limp to Ina exit and there is
NOTHING there, especially at 10 pm CST. I need to stash the trailer with
dirt bike, tools, spare parts and such. I see a sign for a campground
open 24 hours. Did I mention it is still snowing? On the way to the
campground I see a cemetery. I pull in much to my wife disagreement. Has
to be least frequented place to secure highly pilfer able goods on a
snowy, Friday night. Go to the dark backside of the cemetery drop the
trailer just off the pavement (mistake). The car does not want to pull
away. I put down clean dry fatigues (pants), I push, she pulls us out.
We go back to Mt. Vernon, find and open service station that has the
exact tires that I need and someone that can put them on at 11pm. We
were without credit cards and the guy agreed to take an out of town
check since I was in the military. Went back to cemetery, installed
tires/wheels, hooked up and unserviceable (according to the government)
tie down strap to the trailer, keep the car on the pavement, drug the
trailer to the pavement, dug out the dirt, graved, etc. from the tongue,
hook it back up and headed to Tennessee. Got to my mothers at about 5AM
overall about 4 hours late.

It seemed every time we towed something it was "eventful", learning
experience, memory maker, you get the idea.

Now that the towing is out in the open - ---1960 3/4 Ton 109 "
wheelbase Land Rover
is one super towing vehicle. Gear ratio is the highest of any
machine like that.

It is like a Stalin Tank of Trucks. Have I got towing
stories or what. NO I will not bother you now.

Weak spots ? Rear differential and drive axels. -----but mothter
could they PULL.

I had to move around Christmas (67) Annabelle was to tow her twin
sister up the Coast Hwy
101 BC . At first all was ok then going down a long hill I hit
black ice.

I looked in mirror and the twin was overtaking us going down the hill
sideways.

Yes we made it BARELY there was no other traffic. If you tow I
agree ----if you are
HIGHLY experiensed and land is flat ---A Rabbit will tow a 3/4
tontruck. In BC ?
forget it ---you need muskle -----and lots of it and BRAKES. -----How
many trailer
toungues have I pulled right off trailers ? many. -----seems that
is the weakest spot.

Hagar .

PS : keep a pulling.
