[Vwdiesel] 1.9 diesel with some issues - oil, valves, not running, etc.

Hey Gang,

I’m going down to pull a 1.9 diesel from a Vanagon on Monday. I’m getting it complete (longblock, pump, manifolds, no accessories) for $150 as it has some "issues." It’s not setup with a turbo right now, but I have been told it has the piston oilers and the return line tapped into the pan and capped off right now.

Engine history (as I have been told):

The engine came from Overland in Ca. It was installed in the Vanagon about 2,000 miles ago by a previous owner (about 2 years ago). The current owner bought the van and drove it for a while until it “blew.” He pulled the head and found that two pistons are marred (1 & 3) and the head has some bent valves. He also indicated that it was blowing some oil out through the dipstick on occasion. The timing belt was intact and did not appear to have slipped (from owner’s interpretation). It ran fine up until “the incident” after which he parked the van and started his investigation into what happened. His determination was inconclusive.

I have photos available here: (they are large so you can zoom in, etc.)

Photo #1 – Head with cam removed: http://www28.brinkster.com/mikeyworks/Bora5%20001.jpg

Photo #2 – View of engine, inj. Pump, accessories: http://www28.brinkster.com/mikeyworks/Bora5%20002.jpg

Photo #3 – Top of block, note marred piston heads: http://www28.brinkster.com/mikeyworks/Bora5%20003.jpg

Now, my questions are:

- What would cause the oil to come out the dipstick like that? Blowby? Possible clogged oil channel?

- Can the piston heads be cleaned up and used as is?

- Is there anything I should be looking for when I get it home and start tearing into it?

- Looking at photo #2, is that a TD pump? If not, will the LDA from my 1.6 TD pump work on this pump?

Regardless of the true condition of this engine, I will get it as I think it’s component parts are worth more than $150 if I end up scrapping the rebuild and part it out.

Anyone know of a good US retailer for 1.9 parts? I have someone in BC that is willing to help me acquire parts, but I wanted to know if there was anything this side of the border as well.

Thanks,

Mikey
