[Vwdiesel] synchro 1.6TD

Hello all, 

I've been beaten by the weather and a bit of self stupidity so my vanagon
been sitting in the yard now for 2 months. Sick of driving around in this
weather in a ancient Polo I'm going to see a van tommorrow. It's an 1987 1.6
TD Synchro with an exchange engine (last summer) 300 000km on the body.

Have to make an offer somewhere between 1000 and 1500 euro's for it. Problem
is I wouldn't know a turbo if it fell on me and the only experience of 4x4's
is messing around with a 1957 landrover...

So what should I look (or listen) for? How would I know if the turbo and
synchro are working properly is the first thing that came to mind... Are
there good and bad years for synchro's?

Any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated....  Thanks.
