If you look at the second picture in this link you will see the top
engine cover/insulation, under it about midway between the VW emblem and
the right side hold-down is the oil filter.

I sure there is better picture out there somewhere.

You might check this web site for a picture of an older (mk3)TDI engine.. 
It looks like they use the old canister style filter,

All the newer (Mk 4's) look something like this...
And use the cartridge style filter...

p.s. - I have been reading the e-mail here for year or so, and have
       learned a bit.. now I bite the bullet and have gotten a couple
       of '81 rabbits, one for parts, one I hope to make whole again..
       When the snow is gone, I'll probably have a few questions!
