Just a quick reply....got to leave soon for Bondo Golfy's maiden voyage.
It's about -10*C outside
and she started on her own this morning. Took me about a minute of
cranking, but it did it ! . . just barely.....the suspense was killing me.
chachugchachugchachug...chchchchchchchug cha chug
chchchchchchchVRoooom......(release the smokescreen !)........I'll have to
remember this when the black flies get bad this summer, ha ha
There is LOTS and LOTS of smoke on start up. Much worse than my old 88
Jetta TD. Smoke is mostly blue. I am presuming bad rings? Possibly
valves?
Also, I note that when I am accelerating down the highway and reach near
maximum revs in any gears, the car seems to "bog down" and lose quite a bit
of power. I am learning where each "max" revvs are for each gear by sound
and feel, but so far have just driven a dozen 5km trips. I will install a
tach someday. For now, starting and reliability is my #1 goal. I have
heat, so that obstacle is now past. (thanks Shalyn ;-)
Am leaving in 15 mins for a 30km journey...park for a few hours...then back
home 30kms. Taking my 4 yr old son and a big case of tools with me.....just
in case ;-)
Will report back and read your details closely when I get home tonight. The
valuable info does not go unappreciated Hagar and Everyone......though I
know I like to ask a LOT of questions......LOL!~ (hi hi)
Lots of smoke....lack of power @ high revs...no radio...guess I can't expect
much for a $100 car with 404,500 kms on it, can I ? At least I have motion,
good brakes, new tires and most importantly for NB..............HEAT ! ! !
yayayayayayyyyyyyy!
Mike in NB........maiden voyage coming up !

Golfy ).
fuel consumption during idle?CCCcccold here ! Smith, Michael
I Hagar say thank you Mike for this one ---starting a 100 dollar 85 Golfy
when the
mercury say minus 20 C is a real challenge. I am in PAIN 24 7
BUT when
I drive Bunny Bondo or I consentrate on problems like this
others) ---I do not
seem to feel the pain.
First , you are trying to make a NYLON purse out of a pigs ASS. ---- so
you will need
this place ----a LOT. . -------- First thing to do ? ---look in the
garage and see if you have
any old sleeping bags or Blankets. Then go to a homeless person on the
street and
hand it to her .A few cans of soup and a Cider inside would do little harm.
Why ? ----very important to get your mind in the right mindset-. And if
you think a Cold
Golfy is a problem ----try being a street person. You have NO PROBLEMS.
just
a few challenges.
I was lucky to have a very smart Teacher in 1948 in Copenhagen Denmark. He
lived in
an apartment close to the amputation hospital ----they do all the work
for Greenland
---the whole country. He told the class that every time he had problems at
home --
and it looked bad.----He would take the hand of Martha --and say lets take a
walk.
After walking around the block of that hospital ? HE said shit by the
time we get home ? we got no problems.
I promise to hang in there with you ---because I know some of cold starter
types here and
James Hansen and ----so on and so on ---- I am a Harry Potter type
and ----when
people ask me "How did you know how to do THAT?" ----I say MAGIC. .
Ask any
Idiot Savant ---- they do not know . ( I do know that a lot of nifty
tricks come from here ).
Val Christian just come up with a nifty Idea --- I am going to test it this
weekend. And for you
Mike it may just do it. A battery in the trunk two wires to the
plugs ---That will heat
the swirl chambers while you work. At 12 Volts the peak watt is 180 W per
plug , at 6 Volts
say 45 Watts per plug or a bit less.. Measure the current to know for
sure. For an 8 hour
workday ? a battery will do that . Go the the car at lunch and
energize ----4 hours at
15amps ? it should work. (--REMEMBER I have not done it so far.) BUT
it is
too good an I dea not to test.
You work at the Hospital ? great (brain surgeon ?) ----- Go to ward
# 6 --and ask the
head NURSE if she has any Diesel mechanics there. ----then to the
Maternety ----then
to the OLD geezer place. remember where there ia a WILL there is a WAY.
For the flyboys ? remember "Keebird" ----frozen in time ? -------- I
literely cried when I
saw that film. The Saga took place in Denmark.
I look at the Old Volks home as a warehouse of knowledge------and we can get
it all for
FREE: . I am still looking for that BOSCH VE pump person. ---last
week I visited
Mr.Bob. Walters ----there he lies with tubes up his nose -----but his brain
? sharp as a
knife. Electrical type ---with experience ---that is hard to beat.
(Lenora and I went there
to get his money) ( for the "Kitty Care Fund" ).
Mike not much you can do about compression right now. BUT you can
do someting real easy about
Cetane number ---injection point ----and cranking speed and heat.
So you must carry a thermometer ------and a cell phone . How far from
home to work ?
If you got BAD fuel less than 40 cetane ? ----park Golfy. .... So
first thing is to get the number
up at least for starting. Get it up to 100 to 200 Cetane. ------you
may quote me it
works. --------A liter or two of Hexyl Nitrate ----------a liter
of Ether will get you well in to springtime.
Falcon pipette is what I use. Mine are #4 I think they are
c. ---- Banjo must be easy to
remove and put back fast .So keep the outside of pump Hospital (operating
room) CLEAN.
First thing I do ? I make sure pump is full to the brim -----but a 5 cc
of ether added will do wonders.
Keep the Ether frozen. as cold as possible.
DO NOT USE STARTING FLUID IN SPRAY BOMBS..
Pull your battery terminals and sandpaper to a shine cover in Vaseline and
reinstall.
Brand new my ass That lead has to be SHINY. ----SHINY ? got it ?.
Oh and by the way that Ammeter is not identical to the one I got from cTc .
Not important
for doing plugs. ----you should pull 45 amps --on test. (3 plugs).
KD tools may still be selling a Ammeter 1000 Amp jobby real
cheap. It works like a
charm on Battery to starter cables.
Hagar.
PS: I just changed # 4 plug on Bunny Bondo ---NO sign of lubrication ---
Put lots of Ever -Sleeze on your plugs and injectors ---Then next time it
will be a piece
of Apple pie to remove ---Use marine grade .
