This is certainly a viable method for an incremental improvement.

BTW, the stock Bosch altenator on my 91 VW Jetta Diesel, puts out 
122 amps, measured at 80F.   Honest.  Gets warm, but will "do it all
day".   I like having a _real_ altenator.

Now, if I could convert that into a welder...perhaps even combine with my
heavy compliment of ham radio equipment in the car to get a TIG welder,
that would be super!
