[Vwdiesel] Steering wheel locked...how to fix??

I posted this to the Mercedes list, but since many folks on this list also
have Benz's, here it is:

Just had a frustrating experience with our 1983 300SD. We were trying to
leave the store, and the steering wheel lock would not unlock.

So, the key would turn a bit, but not enough to unlock the steering wheel
and start the car.

It seems like I read how to fix this awhile ago, but cannot find it via
search.

So, can anyone point me to how to fix a locked steering wheel?
