I think the diff in the auto trans can also use GL-5. The Vanagon trans is
an odd one, in that it has a highly stressed hypoid gear (the ring & pinion),
yet does not use GL-5 which is specifically designed for such gears. In this
application only the best synthetic GL-4 will do, or just use a GL-5 and
suffer with poorer shifting and possibly shorter syncro life, but longer R&P
life (a $600 part, I have a failed one I kept as a paperweight...). Many,
including the local VW dealer, and the VW shop that rebuilt my Vanagon
trans, just use plain old GL-5, not even synthetic. I can confirm that the
cold shifting, even at 15C, with GL-5 dino oil, is awful!
