Might work in a pinch but not for the long run.  Assuming hypoid gears, the GL-4 oil would break down over time from the 
shearing action of the gear teeth sliding past each other.  That's where you need the EP additives in a GL-5 oil to hold up to 
that.  You can get GL-5 oils with friction modifiers already in them.  For example most of Redline's regular GL-5 gears oils 
have limited slip additives, you need to use the "NS" versions to not get the additives:
