[Vwdiesel] drive axle seals

Fallowing is part of an email I posted on Sunday.
I've edited it a little bit for further clarity.

I noticed that the local O'Reily's Autoparts store had
some GL-4 on the shelf yesterday, which is good to
know.

BTW, I finally replaced the leaky flange seals
yesterday. Instead of using the ratchet strap, I
decided to use the tool that Sandy Cameron passed on
to me. Here is a pic he sent me:

I did modify it a little...

I found that the bolt is a 10 mm w/1.50 pitch. The
bolt I used was right at 4 1/4 inches long. I used
Angle Iron with a 3/8 inch hole drilled in it for the
bolt. (I had to wiggle the bit in the hole just a bit
to make it slightly larger.) The bolt went through a
nut that was large enough for the bolt to fit through
loosely. (The idea was I wanted a very thick
washer...)

The flange bolts were screwed in just so the threads
started poking through the other side. I also found
that it was easiest to start reinsertion to not try to
have the bar sitting on the bolts, but to start
threading the large bolt in the axle just a bit, then
push the flange in enough to pull the angle iron over
the flange bolts. Then it can be tightened to
compress the spring.

When I filled the trans, I had the passenger side on
the ground, with the driverside really high. I topped
it off (because some had leaked out due to leaky
flange seals) with some Lucas brand engine oil
additive. The bottle states it is also good for
manual transmissions. I had the driver side up
because I had read on the list that the filler plug
was actually a little low for the 5-speed trannys so I
wanted to get extra in there.
