Well I couldn't get the axle flanges off the car. I tried some things but
they just will not compress enough to remove the c clip. So I took it to a
local transmission shop. Guess what? They couldn't remove them either, so I
tried another shop, same thing, they didn't want to break anything so they
stopped as well and didn't get them off. So now I'm stuck back at doing it
myself again. This time I guess if I mess something up it is my fault and
will just have to deal with it, but I can't run it to much with the leak. It
isn't bad yet, just enough to wet the bottom of the transmission and some of
the cross member behind it but no real drips on the drive way, maybe one or
two on an over night sitting. I figure I will just have to get down there
and smack it hard with my sledge hammer and a big 2x4. Would heat make a
difference? If all else fails I know of two other 5sp trannies in the
salvage yard that I can pull and carry out for $40. Which I will do anyway
just to get them. One is in an 85 Jetta TD and the other is an 85 NA, what
is the difference in those as opposed to mine? I was told mine doesn't have
as tall a high gear.
Also, I ran across an other individual that has a 91 ECO Jetta, same color
and all, but his speed-0-meter only goes up to 120mph where mine goes up to
140mph and his has red dots at certain speeds as a reference as to when to
shift into the next gear where mine does not. Anyone know why the two
differences? Other than that it was something to see an engine compartment
that was complete and just like it came from the factory and no altered
lines or wires. His also has 290k on it with working AC
