For a while I have been somewhat disappointed that the only TDI models
available in the U.S. have been the more powerful versions. Being entirely happy
with the performance of my n/a 1.6 jetta, I have thought that the 1.6TD in a
jetta is luxurious regarding power. I have not driven the TDI, but am sure that
although it would be fun to drive, if added economy were in the picture I
would opt for Less power. I have recently had the thought that it would be
possible to build a 1.6TDI. Please correct my thinking if in error. The early
TDI's shared the same block as the mechanical 1.9TD AAZ engine. I know that 1.9TD
engines have been assembled using the 1.6 head, manifolds, turbo and pump.
This leads me to belive that a 1.6TD block could be used with the early 1.9 TDI
head, manifold, pump, controls etc. in order to construct a potentially less
powerful, but less fuel consumptive 1.6TDI engine. I imagine some adjustment
would be needed in the computer controls for the reduced air flowing through
the engine. I am also unsure if pump mounting would present any problems. Any
thoughts?
Andrew
