Europe has available the 1.4TDI and the 1.2TDI. I understand that the 1.9TDI
is detuned to run on the poorer quality diesel available here and thus less
powerful than the European 1.9TDI but my point is still valid. The smaller
displacement TDI engines are unavailable in the US.
I agree that too much power is an oxymoron until there is a cost applied to
that power (which there always is). In my opinion "too much power" is any
amount above the amount that would be considered adequate for the vehicles
intended purpose, that incurs additional cost. The purpose to most of my vehicles is
not "sport", but rather economic "utility". Getting from point A to point B
with X amount of stuff safely, comfortably and cheaply. If given a choice
between a more powerful engine and a less powerful engine that consume a similar
amount of fuel. 100 out of 100 intelligent individuals agree that the more
powerful engine is better. If given a choice between two engines that both can
accomplish the desired task, where one consumes more fuel AND is also more
powerful, I will choose the less powerful one until there is no cost or labor to
acquiring the fuel. The more powerful engine is "too powerful".
Power is also highly adictive in automobiles, and therefore to be avoided.
