Here's Andrew's Top Ten VW Diesel Fuel Economizing Tips.

1.  Keep your foot off it more.
1.  Stop tailgating so you can avoid the brake pedal like the plague.
3.  New air filter.
4.  New injector nozzles.
4.  Somewhat higher breaking pressures for injectors.
4.  Somewhat advanced timing.
7.  Rering/redo valves for better compression.
8.  Optimize highway rpm's for torque (redo/replace tranny).
9.  Get a turbo engine and run it lean on the freeway (It's #9 instead of #1 
because we're talking about economy here, not smile factor).
10.  Jeesh, you're already getting 40-45 mpg, are you gilding a lily?  Relax 
and smile while you pass the fuel station. :-)
