Additives are another thing for a CR system.
Either use them, or don't... meaning, use it regular, or don't at all and
change the fuel filter more often. I know that GM was having real fits with
water in the fuel in the 03-05 duramax diesels. What was almost as bad as
the crappy fuel filter they use, was the operator using very infrequent use
of alcohol based (read: cheapie) fuel additives. They emulsify the water,
without providing enough lubrication, and the pintles were scoring in the
injectors, which is a total PITA to R&R on the Max- (also a common rail)
Then other additive thing was there are only two brands you should use on a
max, as the wrong ones screw up a sensor in the pump. I know Stanadyne was
one of the good ones, but can't remember the name of the other, but there
were only two that were acceptable, but even then it was important to use
only at recommended dosages. A Gm dealer would have the service bulletin on
this if you have one and haven't been told this by the dealer.
common rail engines need absolutely no contaminants in the fuel, which is
why GM chose to use the shittiest filter known to man on the fuel system.
Racor makes a nice replacement unit.

Yes, thats the "Pumpe-Düse" engine that VW has had
in the USofA since fall of '03/spring of '04.
Everyone else (read that as all non N.Americans)
has has had these engines available for a number of years
before that.
I imagine that what happend was the guy got some bad fuel
past the fuel filter.. Maybe he was trying to recycle
engine oil! :) Anyway, with the higher pressure system
its very critical to have CLEAN! fuel due to closer pump
tolerances and finer nozzle holes..
Drive ON!

I was talking with the service manager at our local dealership, and he told
me about a repair they just did on an 05 Jetta. He says VW is really trying
to make the Jetta a more upscale car. But what really caught my ear
was the description of the engine. I may have this wrong, but apparently,
there is a cam controlled injection system for each cylinder, with no
single pump. (Scalable motor?) They had a car in under warranty with
three out of four injectors bad, and each cylinder was a $1000 parts bill.

And you pull the cam.
Interesting, and I'll have to read more about it when the snow flies.
