Chuck,

I can't recall it, but perhaps Hagar, or someone who has had a pump
apart can comment. I believe that a worn sliding sleeve on the
govenor assembly is responsible for what you're seeing.

I can't comment on the LUCAS fuel conditioner, because I haven't used
it. I have used the Power Service, but mostly in the old days as an
anti gel. In the last 4 years I have not had the need for an anti-gel.
Yep, the fuel is that bad.

My take is that this is a sign that your pump is getting old.

Oh, we could get into quantatives, but I disagree with Hagar on the
brakeing issue. Essentially a VW diesel does not brake at all.
Just that a high idle provides more net thrust (torque).

Hagar zes: We are trying to help Chuck Carnohan with a small IP problem
he is having with a 1981 " JEM ". --- Chuck you are in good hands with that
problem. This gang is more than able to get you going.

Is this a guarantee ? --absolutely --- I shall send you a loaner pump while I fix
yours for free. ( my heart allowing ).

Val Christian is correct --the flyweights push on a " sliding Sleeve " worn
or gummed parts could be a problem. ----If idle adjustment does not get you going ?
Time for a can of "Diesel Purge ".

A lot of us here in this forum --- (open to all) ---- share many interests--- like Hamming
flying Photography --------the outcome is diversity of skills and "EXPERIENCE" -------
that is a POTENT combination --- IMHO.

As to the Pump getting OLD ? ---could be but IMHO not so fast.

I remember Chuck changing nozzles -----that would require a Hillbilly Tuning or a
dial indicator timing. Job. ----On OLD pumps and injectors ---I recommend TUNING.
that compensates for worn sleeves pivots ---etc etc .

Chuck I recommend that you set the fuel back a tad and redo Idle setting to as
close to " shaky jake " as you can. ---- Bonny Bondo takes me to town every day
she is smooooooth responsive and there is next to NO soot loading in lube.

She is a shining example of what this forum can do to ------get a NEWBIES old Rabbit
going. You all know who you are ? ---eh Loren ?.

Hagar. the humble ?

PS : certainly Hagar the grateful.
