[Vwdiesel] Diesel talk for beginners --- ( Does a Diesel engine

The reason why I work at developing my brain is to reduce the time and
physical work I do. So pushing a car to prove a point is counter-goal.
In about 1979, a Ham friend and I were playing on an interstate in
Western NY. He was in his manual transmission gasser Rabbit, and I was
in my no-RF-noise diesel Rabbit. We decided to have the downhill run test.
Since the cars were identical in most respects, and they were side by side
on the interstate, with little traffic around, there was no need for a
calibrated hill.

Our proceedure was to crest the hill, and simultaneously go to idle, and
later, to kill the "ignition", eliminating fuel flow in his car
(fuel injected), and in my car (fuel solenoid). We would then coast
down the hill, in different gears, check our speeds at the bottom.
This was all faciliated by 2M radios, supplemented by 70 cm radios,
and HF, although we weren't running long whip antennas. We could
certainly communicate. Not to mention the 10GHz stuff that messed up
the state guys with the funny hats and the light show cars...

Both cars had 4 speed transmissions, and the gear ratios were slightly
different, but close. Somewhere in an old Bentley, I have the notes from
our testing. My recollection is that the diesel turned faster than the
gasser in 4th gear. The bottom line test results were that the diesel
got to the bottom faster, and had a higher "terminal" velocity. At lower
engine RPMs, the diesel was rougher, and the ability to test at low speeds
(25 mph, 4th gear, power off) was limited (after all, we were on an
interstate, and there was some traffic from time to time).

Tests were repeated with different gears selected, windows up and windows
down. Sun roof open and sunroof closed. Measurable drag in both cases.
We also worked the windows and sunroof into forces, with drag and airspeed
factored.

We also played with tire inflation, and rolling speeds. Testing was
limited, because we only had three 30# regrigerant tanks of compressed
air. (before the days of the 12V tire inflating compressor)

We also did several runs with both cars in neutral, and in neutral with
the clutch in. The diesel car fell behind by a small, perhaps statistically
insignificant distance, in each of those runs.

I can't say that I can find it easily, but "Regression Testing of
Rolling Vehicles" was the justification of the analysis, and got an
"A".

The beers were drunk a long time ago, and there's no need to push a car
on a warm day.

ps: I will say one thing, NOTHING slows you down more than a camshaft
breaking on takeoff, on a factory-fresh plane. It was a gasser,
but I'd expect the same result if it were a diesel.

pps: Years later, we would try turning off our cars from increasing
distances from work, to see who could kill the engine the farthest
from work, coast in, maneuver the parking lot, and park the car,
without a restart.
