With a modern diesel engine, you can have power, economy, and stylish
looks. The idea of a GT(Grand Tourismo) style of car with a modern
diesel engine is perfect. You want to do what the big 3(4,5,6?) won't
do.

I second the fellow that suggested a Mercedes turbo-diesel 5 cylinder.
It would be plenty powerful enough, get great mileage, bulletproof
reliability, and parts can be found everywhere.

There is a gent on one of these lists that put a TDI into a VW Corrado.
There is also a NA VW diesel powered Scirocco out there as well.
