And there's the rub.  Almost everything in modern automobiles serves dual
duty as a support to hold "stuff" and a structural member. Not necessarily
structural so much for everyday driving, but in the event of a crash, it can
mean the difference between walking away, and being in a baloney sandwich.
Granted, the VW is a structurally sound vehicle to start with, not like some
I've seen, but that said, you start removing structural panels, you get loss
of integrity of the whole structure.  They aren't called unibody for
nothing.

Rob's Biscayne was a full frame car. That's a whole different ball game when
compared to a unibody structure.  When the windsheild becomes a structural
member, you gotta know, that they are milking it almost as hard as it will
milk.
