update:

the head guy has agreed to hold his labor costs to $250 and finish 
rebuilding the head if I supply all required parts
(this is going to cost me @ $350 including new bolts and gaskets)

while this is $350 more than I was planning on, it's really only $100 
more than other large shops I've called would have charged me

2 qualms:

- several people have told me I need to fit new exhaust valve guides
this guy has already knurled the old ones
he may balk at fitting the new guides even if I buy them

- the chewed-up area around the lifter that lifted should maybe be 
built up with aluminum and then machined back down
pretty sure this guy won't want to do that
the concern is that with any chunks missing or high spots it may not 
hold oil pressure

thoughts on any of this?
