Just from that description it sounds like a bad tie rod end. Outer CV
joint doesn't tend to make the wheel jump unless it's really bad, maybe.
Strut bearings tend to clunk, bang and such but usually don't make the
wheel jump. It's usually more the spring.
Climb underneath and have someone wiggle for you, the steering
wheel that is. Look for slop in anything that moves or shouldn't be.

Is it the proces of turning the steering thats giving the clunking? Thats the strut mounting;
but if its jerking when on the lock and whilst you are going along then that's
outer CV-ish...
