[Vwdiesel] Need diesel Vanagon advice/help (longish)

I don't know if it's true across the board, but whenever I
took off the arms on my pumps for whatever reason I would
look at how they were lined up with those lines on the arm
to the slot in the shaft. Mine were always near the middle
of the (three?) lines. So that's the way I would
re-assemble them.
If you have it too far one way or the other then it would
either be low power or blowing too much black smoke, I
would think. This is not experience talking, tho. Try
playing around with different positions on the shaft. I
don't think you can hurt it other than making the engine
run a bit rough...
