[Vwdiesel] Exterior door handles, 1981 pickup

My drivers door handle has been broke most of the winter, I just took it off 
to see If
i could fix it (couldn't)but found i could open the door by reaching in and 
depressing
the door opening lever. I found a newer jetta handle which looks the same, 
the tumbler
swapped in nicely, bolts up correctly, yet it doesn't activate the opening 
mechanism.
Is there an adjustment on these or am I just installing the wrong handle. 
This is one way
to keep my family out of my truck though.
