btw, I know it's standard procedure to replace the pump on a
full rebuild,
but how
often do they actually wear out? I checked mine as per
Bentley a few years
ago, and
it was within spec for clearances. Do I just toss the old
pump in a box with
all my old
tensioner bearings that also never wear out? ;-)

I've only replace ONE due to wear. That was the one on my
Jetta
where the thrust surface of the crank had gone through it.
:-P Never
had one worn enough to replace due to wear otherwise. Did
have a
couple of getting loose and noisy tensioners though.

I've also only replaced one (VW) for wear and that was on a
gasser (PO had only ever added oil to existing oil...in the
sump was an inch of sediment which was like a dig through
Jurassic to Bronze age (or was it Aluminium Age ;o).

All other cases of low oil pressure cured with various
combinations of shell bearing replacement and/or honing pump
gear ends and faceplate.

Never buy a new pump as routine unless you can tell me that
quality is as good as original. If it is then that's not the
norm!
