[Vwdiesel] Runaway

Heading to flea market at 4 AM, fully laden with all sorts of junk, 81 n/a pickup. Even passenger seat packed. 60 mph, then 70, sort felt like cruise control had taken over. Foot off the gas & still accelerating. A glance in the rearview revealed nothing behind me, cars vanished, replaced by truly remarkable cloud of smoke. RPMs still reasonable but I couldn't believe the smoke. Brake down to 55 & all was OK. Rebuild later that year found all rings stuck except top ones. Compression was good but oil consumption was considerable.
