[Vwdiesel] TD Injection Pump fuelling enrichment

Black smoke out the back is unburnt fuel. Yes, smoking is wasteful.
Excessive fuel also contributes to high EGT's.

You don't need to shut off the boost enrichment. Just turn the max fuel
screw OUT, in 1/8 turn increments. You want just enough max fuel at full
load to just reach 1250*F. Uhhh... is that pre- or post- turbine
readings?

Still, the engine shouldn't be laboring that much just to go freeway
speeds. I would double check injection and cam timing. Open up the
exhaust(read:straight-pipe) and intake(K&N). And make sure you are
getting full boost...10psi.

My '85 Quantum TD with two adults, two kidlets, truck packed with
luggage(that is a BIG trunk) Sure, a lot more aerodynamic, but I could
go 75-80mph up and over the San Gabriel mountains on I-15 passing 99.9%
of all traffic and maintain 1250*F(pre-turbine VDO) Sometimes had to
lighten up on the foot to keep the temp below 1250. But no smoke
what-so-ever.

Recent trip netted about 25mpg, remember this is a heavy vehicle with wind drag. I try to drive in 5th on highway as much as possible since engine is quieter. But watching the Isspro EGT pyrometer gauge in 5th, pointer often heads for red zone and I get the smoke effect. Is the resulting smoke the cause of temp heading into red zone? This can't be good for fuel mileage.
