  CV joints are the only thing I've ever heard go crunch.  :-(  The one that 
did on me was the sound of it failing.  I've seen one lower ball joint fail 
while backing up and then braking.  Seperated and tore the CV apart 
(old Subaru).
  Stuff in the brakes usually won't make a crunch you can hear in the 
car.  S'pose something in the tranny could go crunch.  Usually not 
pothole related though.
