Is it desireable or safe to allow the turbo to develop more than 9 PSI
boost? I know that in gasoline engines you have to lower the compression
ratio when you want to enjoy more exciting boost pressures.

Don't remember just where Jake cranked his to but seems like it was
about 14. My Dasher has peaked at 14 before too. :-) As Andrew said,
no detonation so no worries there. Heat is the only real downside from
a bit more boost on the diesels.
Jake told me about one guy who claimed to be running 30psi on his
Vanagon with a IH turbo fitted to it. Said he got 30K out of a set of
rings! Running things a little harshly it sounds like. NO intercooler
either. :-(
