Well, it's a funny thing, but I was just talking about this subject with a 
buddy last week. And I'm pretty sure that now it's been brought up, all hoses on 
all my vehicles will self destruct soon. 
BUT, in all the years I've driven VW's, which is a few, I can't recall ever 
replacing ANY coolant hoses, ever. Some have had very high mileage. Amazing.

You forgot to mention one of the first examples of cleverness that stupified
me.  All those molded rubber hoses in the engine compartment that have a
different diameter at each end.  What the F?  Poor guy at the side of the
road with a blown coolant hose.  If he didn't happen to break down in front
of a VW parts dealership during business hours he's kinda screwed.
